Haunted Edinburgh

Edinburgh's ghost stories run deep, quite literally: streets buried beneath the Royal Mile, vaults under the South Bridge, and the Grassmarket, where the city's gallows stood. Stay beside the castle or on North Bridge, go underground on a vaults or close tour, then end the night in a vault bar.

Dalhousies Castle Hotel & Spa

4.3 Google4.1 Tripadvisor

Guests experienced furniture moving on its own with a large wooden chair relocating approximately one metre while they were at dinner (with visible carpet indentations from its original position), a young child seeing strange cloud shapes in the corner of the room at 4am, and feeling the pressure of invisible footsteps walking across the bed at 5:30am with accompanying sleep paralysis.

The ghost story: The castle's most sinister feature is the bottle-shaped dungeon, now the wine cellar. Prisoners were lowered by rope through a narrow opening into this underground chamber with no escape through the 11-foot thick walls.

The ghost story: The best-known ghost at the Scotsman is a printer. He is described wearing a blue apron and carrying a tray of metal type, the way newspapers were set by hand before computers, and he is seen in the basement where the presses once ran.
