Haunted pub in London

The Viaduct Tavern

A Victorian gin palace opposite the Old Bailey, with dated reports of poltergeist activity in its cellar, where some say old prison cells survive.

The ghosts

  • Lights going out and a cellar door that wouldn't open, reported by the landlord in 1996
  • A tap on the shoulder and a rolled-up carpet that moved on its own, reported by electricians in 1999
  • Noises recorded in the cellar during a paranormal investigation in 2008

History

The Grade II listed pub was built in 1874-75 and its ornate interior was remodelled around 1900. Some sources say it stands on the site of the Giltspur Street Compter, a debtors' prison, and that the cellar holds surviving cells, but others dispute this. It is now a Fuller's pub.
