Haunted by the Titanic?

30 James Street appears on the Liverpool Echo's list of haunted places you can visit. The building's link to tragedy is real: in April 1912, as news of the Titanic's sinking reached Liverpool, crowds gathered outside, and White Star officials, too afraid to go out, read the names of the dead from the balcony. History of 30 James Street

Albion House was built between 1896 and 1898 for Ismay, Imrie and Company, the firm behind the White Star Line. It was designed by Richard Norman Shaw with J. Francis Doyle, in striped bands of red brick and white stone, on the corner of James Street and The Strand facing the Pier Head.

April 1912

When news of the Titanic's sinking reached Liverpool, crowds gathered outside the White Star offices. Officials, fearful of the crowd, stayed inside and read out the names of the dead from the building's balcony.

The hotel

After standing empty for many years, the Grade II*-listed building reopened in 2014 as 30 James Street, a hotel themed around the Titanic. Its rooms reference the White Star Line, the era and the people linked to the ship, and its rooftop restaurant is named after the Carpathia, the ship that rescued the survivors.
