History of the Childwall Abbey Hotel

The Childwall Abbey Hotel stands beside All Saints Church in Childwall, the only medieval church still standing in Liverpool. The inn is often said to go back to the time of the Domesday Book, and Childwall itself appears there, but the present building is Grade II listed and dated by Historic England to the early 19th century.

Why "Abbey"?

There was never an abbey at Childwall. Local historians say the name was first given to Childwall Hall, built in 1780, and later transferred to the inn because of its Gothic, castle-like details.

The Quarrymen

The pub has a place in Beatles history: it once hosted the Quarrymen, the skiffle group that became the Beatles.

Tips for staying at the Childwall Abbey Hotel
